Following an earlier rumor spread by Android Central that the current global chip shortage means a break for Google’s mid-budget phone to be launched in the coming months, Google has denied such rumors, while also releasing an update on the expected device release. In a comment to TechCrunch, a Google spokesperson revealed: “Pixel 5a 5G is not cancelled. It will be available later this year in the US and Japan and announced in line with the launch of last year’s A-Series phone.” The timeframe means that the device’s arrival will be around late summer, meaning that the device will not be available for Google I / O in May, as many had predicted. Google also limits the device’s availability to two countries for launch.
While Google’s Pixel line hasn’t taken the world by storm, leading to long-standing rumors that the company wants to shake things up, The Verge notes that it hasn’t been particularly valuable when it comes to product announcements. Despite rumors about Google’s plan to shake things up and despite problems on the premium side, the company’s “A” line has helped the company maintain its overall numbers.
