Tesla Plans To Turn Every Home Into a Distributed Power Plant

Tesla CEO Elon Musk appears to want to transform every home into a decentralized power plant that generates, stores, and even feeds back into the grid by using the company’s product. While the company has sold solar and energy storage products for years, the company changed its website last week to prevent customers from buying only solar or Powerwall energy storage and instead requiring the purchase of a system.

During an investor call, Musk revealed: ‘This is a thriving future for both Tesla and the utilities, and if it doesn’t happen, the utilities will fail to serve their customers. They won’t be able to do it.”

For Musk, the grid will need more power lines, more power plants and larger substations to fully decarbonize with renewable energy plus storage. Distributed residential systems with Tesla products would be a better way from Musk’s point of view. Musk announced the move by tweeting, noting, “solar power will feed exclusively to Powerwall. Powerwall will interface only between the utility meter and house main breaker panel, enabling super simple install and seamless whole house backup during utility dropouts.”
