Samsung May Start Construction Of U.S. Chip Plant In Q3

On Monday, a South Korean newspaper reported that Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest electronics maker by sales, could begin building a planned $17 billion chip factory in the United States.

The chip plant is reportedly due to go into operation in the third quarter of 2021, with commissioning scheduled for 2024.

Citing unnamed industry sources, Electronic Times also stated that Samsung plans to use an advanced process for making lithography chips known as the 5-nanometer extreme ultraviolet (EUV) at the plant, which is said to be built in Austin, Texas.

While Samsung said nothing has been decided yet, documents previously filed with Texas state authorities show that the company is considering Austin as one of the sites for a new $17 billion chip factory.
