Microsoft is merging AI technologies with its low-code programming language PowerFx to enable its customers to use natural language and “programming by example” techniques in the development of PowerApps.
This was revealed during the opening day of its virtual Build 2021 developer conference.
The tech giant said we will see these new features in public previews across English-speaking North America by the end of June.
PowerFx is the low-code text programming language that Microsoft launched earlier this year. It is an open-source tool based on Excel.
Microsoft uses Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) and the Program Synthesis Using Examples (PROSE) software development kit.
GPT-3 is a natural AI model from OpenAI, an organization in close collaboration with Microsoft.
The PROSE technology comes from Microsoft Research and is already integrated into Power BI, Excel, and Visual Studio.
The tech giant explained that the integration of GPT-3 into PowerApps is the first time that GPT-3 has been integrated into one of its commercially available products since it runs on Azure and is operated by Azure Machine Learning Service.
OpenAI released an Azure-based programming interface in 2020 that lets developers test the capabilities of GPT-3.
Microsoft plans to integrate GPT-3 into Azure and other mainstream products.
PowerFx will be integrated with other parts of the Power Platform, and the new natural voice capabilities powered by GPT-3 will also be integrated.
