Google Chrome To Halt URL Bar Project

According to Android Police, Google is killing an idea that began about a year ago after Chrome began experimenting with ways to strip the URL displayed in the address bar to only the domain name.

Instead of “https://www.technewsday.com/2021/06/14/55-of-employees-experienced-damage-to-workforce-health/,” the address would only show “technewsday.com,” making it harder for users to see where they are in the site directory.

While Google engineer Emily Stark initially stated at the start of the project in June 2020 that the company was experimenting with a simplified URL display “to understand if it helps users identify malicious websites more accurately”, she recently examined that the “simplified domain experiment” will now be deleted from the company’s codebase because “This experiment didn’t move relevant security metrics, so we’re not going to launch it.”
