Google Looks For Alternative Method Of Classifying Skin Tones

Google said in an exclusive interview with Reuters that it was working on an alternative to the industry’s standard method of classifying skin tones.

The Fitzpatrick Skin Type, is a six-color scale that is now deemed inadequate due to its limited scale for darker skin.

In light of the growing need to ensure that the technology works well for all skin colors and for different ages and genders, the company stated during the interview: “We are working on an alternative, more inclusive, measures that could be useful in the development of our products, and will collaborate with scientific and medical experts, as well as groups working with communities of color.”
