Russian Hackers Trying To Brute-force Important Networks

In a joint report released Thursday by the NSA, the FBI, the DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Britain’s National Cybersecurity Centre, authorities warned that Russian military intelligence unit 26165, widely known as Fancy Bear, or APT28, used brutal hacking to target almost every area of interest online.

Some sectors include government and military agencies, defense companies, political parties and consultants, logistics companies, energy companies, universities, law firms and media companies.

While the GRU’s Unit 26165 has a history of highly disruptive hacker attacks, security agencies explained that it uses relatively simple techniques against targets, guessing the username and passwords to gain first access and that it had used the procedure to successfully break through multiple units and exfiltrate emails from them.
