Windows 10 Security Updates Affects Printing On Some Systems

Microsoft has notified users of printing and scanning issues on devices using smart card (PIV) authentication caused by changes to CVE-2021-33764 in the security updates for Windows 10 dated July 2021.

While the problem affects smart card authenticating printers, scanners and all-in-one devices that “don’t support DH or advertise support for des-ede3-cbc (“triple DES”) during the Kerberos AS request,” Microsoft reassured users that all affected smart card authentication devices should work as expected after using the username and password authentication.

Windows 10 users who encounter the problem are advised to check that they have the latest drivers and firmware installed on the faulty printer or scanning devices.

If the problem persists, users should ask the device manufacturer for updates to report the affected device’s complaint with CVE-2021-33764.

Microsoft is working on a temporary mitigation that comes with a future update to allow printing and scanning on affected devices again.
