Lucasfilm Hires Deepfake YouTuber For VFX Skills

Lucasfilm recently confirmed the addition of YouTuber “Shamook” to its visual effects division Industrial Light and Magic.

Shamook is best known for “The Mandalorian deepfake” video published in December. The video has generated almost 2 million views for improving the VFX used to de-age Mark Hamil.

Deepfake videos use AI to make it appear that a person is doing or saying something they have never done.

The studio was so impressed with his VFX job that they offered him a job.

He confirmed the news via the comment section of his latest YouTube video, in which he explained that his job is “Senior Facial Capture Artist.”

He wrote, “As some of you may already know, I joined ILM/Lucasfilms a few months ago and haven’t had the time to work on any new YouTube content. Now I’ve settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They’ll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart.”

A Lucasfilm representative said of the hiring: ‘[Industrial Light and Magic] is always on the lookout for talented artists and have in fact hired the artist that goes by the online persona ‘Shamook”
