Intel Fails To Reverse $2.18 Billion Patent Verdict

U.S. District Judge Alan Albright in Waco, Texas, has rejected Intel Corp’s request to overturn a jury verdict that ordered the chipmaker to pay VLSI Technology LLC $2.18 billion for patent infringement.

Albright also rejected Intel’s motion for a new trial in a sealed order released late Monday.

Jurors awarded VLSI $1.5 billion and $675 million for Intel’s infringement of two patents once owned by Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors NV.

Intel said in a statement on Tuesday it was disappointed with the decision and plans to appeal.

At the appeal hearing, Intel said the verdict was tainted by erroneous jury instructions and evidence decisions and was in fact based on previous Intel settlements, which VLSI’s own damages expert admitted were not comparable.
