Facebook Tests Out VR Remote Work App

On Thursday, Facebook launched a test of its new virtual reality remote work app called the “Horizon Workrooms App.”

Facebook believes that this app represents an early step towards building the futuristic “metaverse,” a word used to describe immersively, shared spaces that are reached across multiple platforms and that depend on both physical and digital coverage.

Facebook’s new virtual reality remote app allows users of Facebook’s Oculus Quest 2 headsets to hold meetings as an avatar version of themselves.

The app allows up to 16 people together in VR and up to 50 in total, including video conference members.

Commenting on the technology tested, Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook’s Reality Labs group, said that the new Workrooms app gives “a good sense” of how the company imagines elements of Metaverse. Facebook assured that it will not use people’s work conversations and materials in Workrooms to display ads on Facebook.
