Can Wikipedia Achieve Its Goals In An Era Of Misinformation?

The Wikipedia Foundation has banned seven editors associated with a group from mainland China whose platform is accused of trying to advance the interests of the Chinese state.

The decisions have raised questions about how Wikipedia will survive in a world dominated by misinformation and governments “relentless determination to present their truth to the public”.

Wikipedia has long earned a sterling reputation with its system of volunteers actively monitoring articles and implementing changes as new information emerged.

The recent ban and ongoing crisis between voluntary editors of the Chinese language edition over how events in Hong Kong should be portrayed has raised concerns about the platform’s future.

Maryana Iskander, the incoming executive director of the Wikipedia Foundation, said it was the foundation’s duty to protect its volunteers, provide verifiable knowledge, and ensure transparency.
