Google claims it is the most searched word on the platform of its rival, Microsoft’s Bing search engine, and stresses that its services are simply the most popular, despite accusations by the European Union that it is abusing its market power.
Lawyer Alfonso Lamadrid, defending Google in the European Union Court of Justice, said: “We have submitted evidence showing that the most common search query on Bing is, by far, ‘Google’. People use Google because they choose to, not because they are forced to. Google’s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google to rival search engines.”
The E.U. has accused Google of using the success of Android in the smartphone market to make Google the default search engine. Margrethe Vestager, the EU Competition Commissioner, accused Google of forcing Android manufacturers to pre-install its search app and the web browser Chrome.
