Facebook and Instagram Reconnected Following Major Outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are back online after an hours-long blackout which disabled the Facebook-owned social media networks for several hours.

While Facebook stated via Twitter on Monday evening that its apps would be back online and apologized for the inconvenience the blackout may have made people around the world, some Facebook users confirmed that they were able to partially regain access to the social media app around 5:45 pm ET, although some people still have connection problems on WhatsApp.

Sharing information on the extent of the outage, the outage tracking site Downdetector.com, revealed that it received 10.8 million reports of problems from the US, Europe, Colombia and Singapore, with the problems first surfacing around 15:45 GMT.

While Facebook shares initially opened lower on Monday following a whistleblower report, the outage caused the company’s shares to slide further, dropping 5.3%.
