SlashData Reports On The Top Programming Languages

SlashData’s State of the Development Nation report focused on global trends for software developers in 160 countries for the third quarter of 2021 and covered programming languages, tools, APIs, apps and technology segments, including developer recruitment.

The report also looked at developers’ involvement in 5G and IoT and how programmers are leveraging the latest technological advances in tools, apps and services.

JavaScript’s enduring prominence in web and back-end applications has consolidated its position as the most popular programming language and the most widely used language in the world for several years. In the last six months alone, 2.5 million developers have joined the JavaScript community.

Python may be a far second, but the language is now used by an impressive 11.3 million programmers, especially in data science, machine learning, and IoT applications. For this year alone, Python has added 2.3 million developers to its community.

Completing the top five most popular languages were C/C++ which is used by 7.5 million developers, PHP, which is used by 7.3 million developers, and C #, which is used by 7.1 million. According to SlashData, PHP experienced the fastest growth in the last six months, attracting 1 million new developers between Q1 and Q3. The language is extremely popular for web and back-end applications.
