Costco Confirms Security Breach, Alerts Its Customers

Retail giant Costco confirmed a security flaw in its latest notification to affected customers: “We recently discovered a payment card skimming device at a Costco warehouse you recently visited. Our member records indicate that you swiped your payment card to purchase the affected terminal during the time the device may have been operating.”

This became necessary after the company discovered a skimming device for payment cards during a routine inspection in one of its warehouses.

The company has since taken several measures, including removing the device, notifying authorities while cooperating with law enforcement, and finally notifying customers, especially those who have recently shopped at one of its stores. Costco in its notification to customers that some customers’ information may have been stolen during the breach if the backers of the action were able to gain access before it was discovered.

Customers are therefore advised to check their bank and credit card statements for fraudulent charges, while ensuring that they report suspicious transactions to the relevant financial institutions.
