Recent Nordpass research has identified the top 10 most common passwords, as it has strongly warned users of the danger of using simple passwords.
The list of the 10 most common passwords includes “123456,” “123456789,” “12345,” “querty,” “password,” “12345678,” “111111,” “123123,” “1234567890,” and “1234567.”
Nordpass said in its analysis that attackers use automated tools to guess passwords with brute force to get the accounts’ passwords.
Of the 200 most commonly used passwords, only 30 take more than 1 second to crack. These simple passwords include “chocolate” (3 seconds), “Michael” (8 seconds), “tinkle” (2 minutes), “Jennifer” (2 hours), and “myspace1” (3 hours).
The study also found that those who have weak passwords follow certain patterns or trends, including names, sports teams and animals.
To help people better protect themselves online, Nordpass has identified some strategies to follow.
These include using complex passwords with at least 12 characters and a diverse combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
It also includes avoiding the reuse of the same passwords on multiple websites or platforms, updating passwords every three months, verifying the strength of your passwords, using multifactor authentication, and using a password manager.
