Cox Suffers Data Breach as Hacker Impersonates Agent

Cox Communications aka Cox Cable, a digital cable and telecommunications provider that provides Internet, television and telephone services in the United States, has been hit by a data breach after a hacker gave a support agent access to customers’ personal information.

Customers received letters this week, informing them that Cox Communications, on October 11th, 2021, suffered a data breach that may have potentially revealing their private information.

Details of the incident were not disclosed, but it was concluded that the hacker likely used a social engineering attack to gain access to the company’s internal systems, where customer information was stored.

The data breach exposed the following sensitive information for some customers:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Cox account number
  • Cox.net email address
  • Username
  • PIN code
  • Account security questions and answers
  • and/or the services customers receive from Cox.
