Hackers Use Video Player To Conduct Supply Chain Attacks

Palo Alto Networks Unit42 discovered a new supply chain attack in which attackers manipulated a cloud hosting feature to attack more than 100 real estate websites.

This was possible thanks to the malicious scripts (skimmers) injected into the websites to steal information entered into web page forms.

Revealing the nature of the attack, the researchers found that the threat actors abused a cloud video hosting feature and used it to inject skimmer code into a video player.

Once the site embeds the video player, it embeds the malicious script, infecting the page.

The affected cloud video platform has since been notified, and the researchers continued to help the infected sites clear their pages.

Web administrators who embed JavaScript scripts into their websites are advised not to blindly trust them. Administrators are also advised to conduct periodic integrity checks of web content and to use form-jacking detection solutions.
