Demand For VPNs Skyrockets In Russia After Instagram Ban

Demand for VPNs is at an all-time high in Russia following the ban placed on Instagram.

According to data monitoring firm Top10VPN, on the eve of the Instagram Ban, demand for VPNs spiked 2,088% higher than the daily average demand in mid-February.

Following the sections imposed on Russia by Meta, the Russian government reportedly restrict Meta’s Facebook operation in the country.

The recent decision to ban Instagram in Russia was in retaliation for a change in Meta’s policy on its platforms including Facebook and Instagram.

Meta’s adjusted policy allows users in Ukraine to post messages such as “Death to the Russian invaders.”

Explaining why it was closing down Instagram, state communications regulator Roskomnadzor described Meta’s actions as a breach of international law.

“We need to ensure the psychological health of citizens, especially children, and adolescents, to protect them from harassment and insults online,” Roskomnadzor stated.
