Brazil’s Supreme Court Revokes Telegram Suspension

Share post:

Brazil’s Supreme Court has revoked its earlier order suspending the operation of Telegram in Brazil.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had previously ordered the suspension after Telegram failed to heed the court order to suspend accounts flagged for misinformation.

Revoking the initial suspension, Moraes claimed Telegram had shown “full compliance.”

President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters used Telegram as a necessary tool to spread misinformation. Other platforms like Meta’s WhatsApp, Google, and Twitter removed offending accounts identified for spreading misinformation except for Telegram.

Telegram’s inability to follow the court order led to Moraes giving the platform a Sunday deadline to comply with the orders.

The court also ordered the platform to freeze accounts belonging to Allan dos Santos, an activist linked to the President.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov tendered an apology on the company’s behalf for its “negligence” in following the court’s orders.
