According to published findings from Kaspersky, DDoS attacks were at an all-time high in the first quarter of 2022.
According to the cybersecurity firm, the high number of DDoS attacks is due to the ongoing geopolitical crisis in Ukraine.
Attacks increased in January and February with an average of 1,406 attacks per day. On January 19 Kaspersky recorded the highest number of DDoS attacks (2,250). The average number of attacks has fallen since the end of February.
Key findings of the report are: Kaspersky DDoS Intelligence system detected 9,052 DDoS attacks, 44.34% of attacks were against targets in the U.S. which comprised 45.02% of all targets, and the largest number of DDoS attacks (16.35%) come on Sundays.
The report found that most attacks (94.95%) lasted less than 4 hours, while the longest attack continued for 549 hours (nearly 23 days). 53% of the attacks were UDP flood, and 55.53% of the command and control servers were located in the U.S.
Lastly, China accounted for 20.41 percent of Kaspersky’s SSH honeypots and 41.21 percent of Telnet traps.
Tips for protecting organizations from DDoS attacks include: maintaining web resource operations, validating third-party agreements and contact information, implementing professional solutions, understanding traffic and using network and application monitoring tools, and having a restrictive Plan B defensive posture on the ground.
