The FBI is warning organizations to beware of candidates who use deepfakes or stolen personally identifiable information to apply for a variety of remote and work-at-home jobs.
Deepfakes include a video, image, or recording that has been convincingly altered and manipulated to portray someone as doing or saying something that has not actually been done or said.
According to the FBI, complaints arose during online interviews when organizations reported a disconnect between the audio, actions and lip movements of the on-camera interviewee.
Remote jobs targeted include jobs that give these candidates access to customer PII, financial data, corporate IT databases and/or proprietary information, including information technology and computer programming, database, and software related job functions.
Whereas stolen PII and data were used to apply for these jobs, victims reported that the use of their identities after pre-employment background data checks discovered PII given by some of the applicants belonged to another individual.
