Mozilla Report Calls For Regulation As Solution to Artificial Intelligence Harm

Mozilla’s new Internet Health 2022 report calls for urgent regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a solution to the harm it causes.

According to the report, there is a power gap between those who benefit from AI and those who are harmed by AI. The report shows that centralizing influence and control over AI, while AI is adopted around the world, does not work to the benefit of the majority of people.

While the data used by AI models is personal data, companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Alibaba and others continue to enjoy most of the benefits of AI.

These technology companies and government organizations continue to use AI recklessly, spreading harm, including misinformation, financial and sector bias and discrimination.

The ruthless use of artificial intelligence by technology companies and government organizations, often clash with human rights defenders and data protectors, so industry regulation serves as a guide to innovation that can help foster trust and create a level playing field.

While Mozilla supports regulations such as the DSA in Europe and the EU AI law, it believes that data protection and consumer rights could also play an important role in the actualization of responsible AI.

Regulations aimed at curbing the reckless use of artificial intelligence are important, but the report notes that regulation is only one part of the equation, as enforcement will be necessary; without enforcement, regulation will not change things.

“A critical mass of people calling for change and accountability, and we need AI builders who put people before profit. Right now, a big part of AI research and development is funded by big tech, and we need alternatives here too,” said Solana Larsen, Mozilla’s Internet Health report editor.
