How Users Can Fix the ‘Failure to Start’ Issue After Installing Microsoft Edge 105

Windows users reported problems with Microsoft Edge which would no longer start after installing the Microsoft Edge 105 update.

Readers of BornCity and Deskmodder confirmed the ongoing incident has discouraged customers from using their devices.

According to Deskmodder, the problem was caused by a depreciated MetricReportingEnabled policy in the Windows registry.

The policy allows Microsoft Edge users to enable or disable reporting of usage or crash-related data to Microsoft. However, if this policy exists, whether set to “0” or “1,” Microsoft Edge 105 will start, immediately suspend, and then shut down without displaying the browser window.

Microsoft Edge General Manager Sean Lyndersay explained that the outdated policy is responsible for the bug and that it will be fixed in the next Stable version of the browser.

Until the problem is resolved, users are advised to remove the MetricsReportingEnabled value from the MetricsReportingEnabled value from the HKEY_ CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\ Edge registry key.

The sources for this piece include an article in BleepingComputer.
