Microsoft Emergency Update Fixes Blocked Windows Logins

Microsoft has released a Windows 11 update to fix a problem that prevents customers from signing into newly added Microsoft Account Users after they have rebooted or logged out of systems.

Microsoft was able to fix the problem via Known Issue Rollback (KIR). KIR is a Windows capability that reverses buggy Windows non-security fixes that were pushed through Windows update.

“This issue only affects devices after adding a Microsoft account. It does not affect Active Directory domain users accounts or Azure Active Directory accounts,” Microsoft said.

Affected users can get the fix even after restarting affected Windows devices.

For the intended workaround, users experiencing the problem can wait for the lock screen to reappear, as it will resolve itself after some time and allow users to log in as expected.

IT administrators are advised to install and configure a KIR Group Policy to resolve the issue on affected enterprise-run devices.

“The special Group Policy can be found in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> KB5016691 220722_051525 Known Issue Rollback -> Windows 11 (original release),” Microsoft said.
