Amazon launches virtual clinic

Amazon Clinic is a virtual care option that connects users with healthcare providers to help with common conditions such as allergies, acne and hair loss.

This follows the acquisition of One Medical and online pharmacy PillPack in 2018.

Patients in 32 American states will be able to notify doctors via a secure portal to search for personalized treatments and prescriptions for common conditions. Patients can look for birth control options, as well as treatment for urinary tract infections, dandruff, migraines and other ailments.

Customers take advantage of the service by first selecting the condition they want to discuss and then choosing a preferred provider. After filling out a questionnaire, they are connected to a doctor via a secure messaging portal, so they can respond calmly. If an illness is not suitable for treatment by the service, Amazon informs its customers before connecting them with a provider.

The cost of initial consultation, which Amazon says will in many cases be the same or lower than the average copay in many cases. Customers can also pay for the service with funds from flexible spending accounts and healthcare spending accounts.

The service does not include health insurance and prices vary by provider, it said.
