Google, Oracle, Microsoft, and Amazon will share a $9 billion contract awarded by the Pentagon to build its cloud computing network until 2028.
The separate contracts, worth a total of $9 billion, will provide the Department of Defense with enterprise-wide, globally available cloud services across all security domains and classification levels, according to the contract announcement.
The contract is the result of the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) effort, which is consistent with the United States Defense Department’s effort to rely on multiple providers of remotely operated infrastructure technology rather than a single company, a strategy promoted during the Trump Administration.
The contract is coming about eight months later than it expected. It is part of the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability, or JWCC, initiative, which represents a new path for the U.S. military that will rely on multiple cloud providers rather than a single one. A strategy that the Pentagon had hoped to employ with the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI, contract.
