DNV, an international accredited registrar and classification society was hit by a ransomware attack that knocked its ShipManager software offline and disconnected 1,000 ships from on-shore servers.

The attack occurred on January 7, and the company updated its report yesterday to say it involved ransomware, but affected vessels are not in danger and can continue to operate normally, according to the company.

The attack knocked its ShipManager software offline, leaving approximately 1,000 ships without access to on-shore servers. According to DNV GL, the attack did not compromise any sensitive data, but it did cause some operational disruptions. The company did not say who was behind the attack or how much ransom they had to pay.

“All vessels can continue to use the ShipManager software’s onboard, offline functionalities; other systems onboard the vessels are unaffected,” DNV said. It believes no other servers or data were impacted.

DNV claims that “over 7,000 vessels owned by 300 customers” use ShipManager, and that this attack affected 1,000 ships owned by 70 customers.
