Microsoft launches AI-based cybersecurity tool

In conjunction with ChatGPT, Microsoft has released Security Copilot, its first generative AI cybersecurity solution. The new tool is designed to assist network defenders in consolidating information about new threats and current attacks on their networks.

Security Copilot, according to a demo, works similarly to the ChatGPT interface, except it is based on a narrow selection of verified security sources. For the time being, the tool draws data from Microsoft’s own threat intelligence and products, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the National Vulnerability Disclosure Database.

It can be used by company security teams in two ways: as a chatbot to help prioritize relevant threat research and vulnerability disclosures, and as an assistant to identify the scope of active cyber incidents on their networks. Users can contribute input on the responses to train the AI models running Security Copilot, and each response includes a citation to the source material. The searches are kept confidential by the company that is employing the technology.

One of Security Copilot’s primary advantages is its ability to address the cybersecurity industry’s talent gap. The demand for competent defenders far outnumbers the supply, and Security Copilot can help teams grow their abilities and make the maximum impact by providing step-by-step risk mitigation guidelines.
