Microsoft has proposed that businesses purchase fewer PCs, which is quite unusual.
Microsoft highlighted data from the digital sustainability consultant Px3 to support its position, which showed that contemporary work apps and endpoints may help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost climate action.
The study evaluated the energy usage of desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and thin clients against the energy consumption of a cloud PC. It also looked into “bring your own PC” arrangements, in which firms fund the purchase of PCs that employees may use for both personal and professional purposes. According to the findings, businesses should encourage end users to utilize a Windows365 Cloud PC as their single device during work hours. This would significantly reduce environmental effect and perhaps extend business PC replacement cycles to eight years.
Despite the potential environmental advantages, Microsoft’s plan to lower the number of PCs purchased has been met with opposition from some of its oldest and closest partners, including Intel, AMD, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. These businesses rely substantially on robust PC sales, and they claim that the latest CPUs and PCs they provide make customers much more productive each year. Nonetheless, Microsoft expects that their suggestion will be welcomed by companies dedicated to improving sustainability.
