Snapchat’s AI chatbot receives backlash from users

Snapchat just launched a chatbot called “My AI” that leverages OpenAI’s GPT technology to deliver users with fast responses to their inquiries. However, since the chatbot’s global rollout, consumers have voiced their discontent with it, resulting in negative reviews and complaints on social media.

According to Sensor Tower, an app intelligence organization, the average US App Store rating of Snapchat in the last week was 1.67 stars, with 75% of reviews giving it one. This is a considerable decrease from the average US App Store review of 3.05 in Q1 2023, with just 35% of reviewers awarding one star. In addition, the number of daily reviews has more than fivefold grown in the last week.

Apptopia, another app data source, has noticed a similar trend. According to their findings, “AI” was the most often mentioned keyword in Snapchat’s App Store evaluations during the previous seven days, with 2,973 references. Apptopia has assigned this word a “Impact Score” of -9.2, suggesting that it has had a strong negative influence on user sentiment.

Many Snapchat users are also concerned about the My AI chatbot’s location, which is anchored to the top of the Chat stream within the app and cannot be deleted, or removed. Some people argue that the feed should only be used for regular chats with friends, and that introducing an experimental function is superfluous. Furthermore, some users find the AI function uncomfortable and intrusive since it collects personal data, like their location, without their explicit consent.
