Microsoft is planning to move Windows to the cloud for consumers, according to an internal presentation from June 2022.
The presentation, which was revealed as part of the ongoing FTC v. Microsoft hearing, discusses Microsoft’s plans to build on Windows 365, a service that streams a full version of Windows to devices. So far, Windows 365 has been limited to commercial customers, but Microsoft is now looking to bring it to consumers.
The presentation identifies moving Windows 11 “increasingly to the cloud” as a long-term opportunity in Microsoft’s “Modern Life” consumer space. This would allow users to access Windows from any device, regardless of its specifications. It would also make it easier for Microsoft to update and secure Windows, as it would no longer need to be installed on individual devices.
In addition to the news about Windows 365, Microsoft aims to enhance its gaming business and accessibility by enabling gameplay across various devices. They plan to achieve this by creating new cloud-based gaming services and extending game availability on multiple platforms.
Microsoft also plans to invest in custom silicon partnerships to support its vision of cloud-based Windows. This may involve developing their own ARM-based processors known for their energy efficiency compared to traditional x86 processors.
