Asahi Linux and Fedora partner to bring Linux to Apple Silicon macs

Share post:

The Asahi Linux project, which is working on getting Linux working on Apple Silicon-based Macs, has announced a partnership with the Fedora Project to create a new flagship distro called Fedora Asahi Remix.

Asahi Linux has been working on porting the Linux kernel to Apple Silicon Macs since 2021. The project has made significant progress, but lead developer Hector Martin has expressed frustration with Arch Linux ARM’s support for Apple Silicon.

Fedora is a Linux distribution that is known for its stability and its focus on incorporating the latest components. The partnership between Asahi Linux and Fedora is a good fit, as Fedora is well-positioned to provide the support and resources that Asahi Linux needs to bring Linux to Apple Silicon Macs.

The forthcoming FAR edition of Fedora will likely support Wayland-compatible environments, including KDE, GNOME, and possibly Sway. Notably, the collaboration leverages the extensive history of ARM Linux development and Fedora’s established support for 64-bit Arm systems.

Fedora Asahi Remix is expected to be released in late 2023. The distro will be based on Fedora 38 and will include Asahi Linux drivers. Fedora Asahi Remix is expected to be fully compatible with Wayland-based desktop environments.
