Windows ‘blue screens’ not caused by August 2023 updates

Microsoft has acknowledged that the recent wave of blue screens affecting some Windows users is not caused by issues in its August 2023 optional updates.

In a statement, Microsoft explained that the ‘UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR’ error wasn’t linked to KB5029351 and is isolated to a specific subset of processors. It is collaborating with device manufacturers and will temporarily withhold KB5029351 from affected Windows devices. Microsoft says that the root cause is an incompatibility problem with the affected devices’ firmware.

Affected platforms include Windows 11 22H2 and Windows 10 21H2/22H2. If you have installed KB5029351 and are experiencing blue screens, you can try reverting your BIOS to an earlier version.

MSI has confirmed that users of some of its motherboard models might be affected by this issue. The company has advised users against installing the August 2023 preview updates on their Windows devices.

Intel has said that it is aware of the issue and is working with Microsoft to investigate and resolve it.
