A closed-door forum on artificial intelligence (AI) organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing criticism from civil society groups who say the event is too focused on tech executives and lacks transparency.
The forum will feature the CEOs of some of the world’s biggest tech companies, including Elon Musk of X, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, and Sundar Pichai of Google. It will also include some union and civil society group leaders.
Some groups are taking issue with the fact that the event is closed to the public and that the guest list is heavily weighted towards tech executives.
“We have a balanced and diverse group at the table,” Schumer said in a floor speech. “But we also know that there are many voices who are not represented here today, and we want to make sure that we are hearing from them.”
The Motion Picture Association of America and the Writers Guild of America are invited to the forum, but there are no artists using generative AI specifically included in the event, said Creative Commons, the group that organized the letter.
“Too often, our perspective is brought in after something’s been developed, designed or written, and we really need to be represented in this discussion,” said UnidosUS president Janet Murguía.
