Tech giants call for regulation of artificial intelligence

Tech giants such as Tesla, Meta, Google, and Microsoft have called for regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), following a meeting with U.S. lawmakers in Washington.

The meeting was convened by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and included civil rights advocates. It was held behind closed doors, but the tech leaders have spoken publicly about their support for regulation.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said there was “overwhelming consensus” for regulation, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Congress “should engage with AI to support innovation and safeguards”.

Microsoft’s former CEO Bill Gates and current CEO Satya Nadella were also in attendance, but have not commented publicly on the meeting.

The tech giants are concerned about the potential risks of AI, such as mass layoffs, fraud, and misinformation. They also want to ensure that AI is developed and used in a responsible and ethical way.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, had previously testified before a US Senate committee, highlighting both the promise and risks associated with AI technology. Altman emphasized the importance of proactive collaboration with the government to mitigate potential hazards.
