Volkswagen goes big on ChatGPT as in-car voice assistant

Volkswagen is hoping to revolutionize the in-car experience by integrating ChatGPT, OpenAI’s advanced language model, into its voice assistant system.

Announced at the CES, this integration aims to make the car’s voice assistant more conversational, intuitive, and helpful.

With ChatGPT’s capabilities, Volkswagen vehicles will offer enhanced natural language processing, allowing for more fluid and human-like interactions. This marks a significant step in the automotive industry, as it showcases the potential of AI in enhancing driver and passenger experiences.

While other car manufacturers are testing AI, Volkswagen is going all in, despite some of the risks and issues that plague generative AI systems. Their partnership with a firm called Cerence, that makes “automotive grade” integrations for ChatGPT has given them an advantage in being able to integrate AI quickly.

Volkswagen’s bold move could pave the way for more AI-driven features in vehicles, emphasizing the growing relationship between AI and automotive technology. Given Volkswagen’s recent reputational issues, software malfunctions and slow sales, they may fee the risk is worth it.
