JetBrains has released its latest *State of Developer Ecosystem* report, surveying over 23,000 developers to highlight trends in AI tool adoption, programming languages, cloud platforms, and emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) workspaces.
AI Tools Adoption:
The report sheds light on trial usage versus adoption rates of AI coding assistants. ChatGPT leads both in popularity and satisfaction, with 66.4% of developers continuing to use it after trial. GitHub Copilot follows closely with a 64.5% adoption rate. Anthropic Claude, though less widely used (2.7%), achieved a notable 52.4% adoption ratio. Codeium also fared well with 48.3%, while Google Gemini/Bard and JetBrains AI Assistant trailed at 37.6% and 37.2%, respectively. Amazon Q Developer saw lower adoption at 31.1%, despite its free tier. The survey underscores GitHub Copilot’s success, as it thrives without a general free offering.
Programming Languages and Databases:
Language trends remain stable, with Python (57%) closing in on JavaScript (61%) as the most-used language. TypeScript and Rust continue upward trajectories, reaching 37% and 11%, respectively. Meanwhile, PHP and Ruby usage hit their lowest levels at 17% and 4%. On the database front, PostgreSQL surged from 38% to 45%, while MySQL retained its lead at 52%. SQLite also saw growth, rising to 30% usage.
Emerging VR Workspaces:
The report highlights growing interest in VR headsets as workspaces, with 8% of developers already experimenting and nearly 50% expressing a desire to try. VR’s appeal lies in virtual multi-screen environments, enhanced data visualization, and location flexibility. However, 18% of respondents cited physical discomfort as a major drawback to prolonged VR use.
For cloud platforms, AWS remains dominant at 46%, while Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud trail at 17% and 11%, respectively.
The report provides a detailed snapshot of developer trends, reflecting the rise of AI tools, cloud platforms, and new work technologies in an evolving landscape.
