Microsoft faced another significant service disruption over the weekend, with a Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) outage that blocked users from accessing Microsoft 365 apps. The issue affected users trying to log in using MFA, a security measure widely used by businesses to protect sensitive information.
The outage, which primarily impacted users in Western Europe, also disrupted MFA registration and reset processes. Microsoft initially responded by rerouting traffic to alternate infrastructure while investigating the root cause. The company later confirmed that a section of its MFA infrastructure had become unresponsive, causing the disruption.
Microsoft resolved the issue after an extended period of monitoring and declared service health stable. However, this latest incident adds to a growing list of recent Microsoft outages. In November, a global Microsoft 365 outage affected multiple services, including Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and Outlook. More recently, users faced issues with Office apps displaying “Product Deactivated” errors and unexpected crashes on Windows Server 2016 devices.
The frequency of these outages is raising concerns about the reliability of cloud services that many businesses rely on for day-to-day operations. As companies become more dependent on cloud-based platforms for productivity tools, disruptions like these can have widespread business impacts, emphasizing the need for resilient infrastructure.
