Google Pay Team Reportedly Leaving Following Failed App Revamp

Business Insider revealed that dozens of employees and executives of the Google Payments team have left in recent months.

The most notable of these departures was payments chief Caesar Sengupta after the failed test of a new Google Pay app that replaced the old service with a brand new one.

Sengupta took over the payments division that oversees the Google Pay app and Google’s broader payment infrastructure in 2018, and he pushed for the launch of a new Google Pay app in November 2020, a service that many criticized as poor compared to what Google had before.

Some of its flaws include using SMS instead of a Google account, eliminating support for multiple accounts, which was unreliable as users on the new app could not send money to users on the old app, and many more.

According to the report, staff are worried about further restructuring and slower progress as many senior team members are said to have left.
