MacBook posts growth in third quarter despite PC sales slump

According to a new report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), the huge increase in MacBook shipments was the spotlight of the global PC market in the third quarter of this year.

MacBook shipments increased by more than 40%, while shipments of all other major brands declined. MacBook growth is attributed to extremely high demand during the pandemic, which is significantly higher than before the pandemic.

According to the report, Apple’s MacBook sales rose from 7.1 million in the third quarter of last year to 10 million in the third quarter of this year. Apple increased its market share from 8.2% to 13.5% during this period, when all other major brands shrank.

IDC said it still monitors average selling prices (ASPs) beyond the first quarter of this year, but the ASP has increased five consecutive quarters through the first quarter of this year. The likely explanation is that manufacturers preferred their most expensive models in times of component shortages.

The IDC also reports an ASP of $910, which puts Apple well above the market average and almost certainly at the top of margins.
