Libel lawsuit targets ChatGPT over misinformation

Share post:

ChatGPT is being sued for defamation due to providing incorrect information about a court case on The Second Amendment Foundation v. Robert Ferguson case to journalist Fred Riehl.

ChatGPT wrongly accused radio host Mark Walters of embezzlement in a response to Riehl’s inquiry. Walters, who denies any involvement with The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), filed a defamation lawsuit, claiming damage to his reputation. Walters argues that ChatGPT generated a false narrative by creating a fictional storyline involving him in the genuine legal document.

Sam Altman, the creator of OpenAI, recognized the issue of hallucinations and stated that the business is actively working on building new models to correct such errors. However, OpenAI has yet to react to concerns about this particular topic.

Walters’ attorney, John Monroe, attacked ChatGPT’s accuracy, stating that although AI research and development are admirable, releasing a system that creates hurtful and inaccurate information is irresponsible. The outcome of this litigation might have a substantial influence on the development and deployment of AI language models in the future.
