Parcel Delivery Texts Now A Popular Scam

Impersonating fraud otherwise known as “smishing” is one of the techniques used by criminals to deceive and steal from unsuspecting consumers by using texts pretending to be from trusted organizations.

This type of fraud is now commonly associated with parcel delivery, where fraudsters send text messages claiming that a small payment is needed to deliver a package to millions of mobile users as they look to steal personal banking information from unsuspecting consumers.

This type of fraud took center stage during the pandemic when the world resorted to online transactions and sales.

But it was no surprise that over time, the scam of parcel delivery became more sophisticated, making it even more convincing to many who might not be paying close attention.

According to Laura Suter, a personal finance analyst at AJ Bell, “Everyone thinks they are smart enough to spot a scam text, but the messages have become so sophisticated that it’s easy to be caught out. Lots of people will also see the text when they are in a hurry to receive their package or are rushing, so won’t stop to think about whether it’s legitimate or not.”
