Amazon Warehouse In Alberta Files For Union Vote

On Tuesday, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced through a local chapter that it had filed a motion with the Alberta Labor Relations Board to hold a vote on setting up a union at an Amazon warehouse in Nisku, Alberta, known as YEG1.

Once the labor agency approves the election, all workers employed by YEG1 from September 13 will be able to vote on whether to join Teamsters Local Union 362.

Teamsters Canada national president François Laporte commented on the recent call for a union: “Amazon won’t change without a union. The company has proven itself to be profoundly anti-worker.”

Teamsters Canada spokesperson Christopher Monette said the union effort at the Nisku plant began in the summer and has received huge support since, including a petition signed by “hundreds” of workers at the warehouse.

Monette went on to assure that Teamsters Canada was “prepared for anything” Amazon could do to stop unionization noting that the Canadian chapter is “closely coordinating” with its American counterpart.
