What the Epic Games Versus Apple Ruling Means App Developers

Share post:

The recent court ruling in the legal battle between Apple and Epic Games has both advantages and disadvantages for app developers.

For developers of progressive web applications, the decision is a disadvantage, as the court will not force Apple to introduce push notifications.

For native app developers, however, the latest decision means that they now have a new way to avoid paying more to Apple once their app makes it into the store. Subsequently, however, the approval process is likely to be more difficult, slower, and expensive than in the past.

For mobile app vendors, the injunction, set to begin in the next 90 days if Apple does not appeal, would allow them to sign up users in-app on iOS, while giving companies room to send promotions and billing information by email to avoid App Store fees.

The ruling in question prevents Apple from “prohibiting developers from (i) including in their apps and their metadata buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms, in addition to In-App Purchasing and (ii) communicating with customers through points of contact obtained voluntarily from customers through account registration within the app.”
