Sinclair TV Stations Crippled By Weekend Ransomware Attack

Share post:

The Sinclair Broadcast Group confirmed in a recent press release and SEC filing that it was hit by a ransomware attack and that it has launched investigations to mitigate a potential security incident.

According to the company, certain identified servers and workplaces were encrypted with ransomware on October 17, 2021, causing disruption to certain office and operational networks.

The company also said that while data was taken from its network, it notified management as soon as the security incident was detected and an emergency plan was then put in place to contain the incident.

Currently, the attack has disrupted part of the company’s business, including certain aspects of its provision of local advertising by its local broadcasters.

The latest attack is the second to affect Sinclair’s TV stations following an initial event in July 2021, which led to the company asking all its stations to change passwords “as quickly as possible” following a security breach.
