Ukrainian Gov’t Sites And Banks Suffer DDoS Attacks

Some government websites and banks in Ukraine have been subjected to a “massive DDoS” attack, according to the county’s State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection.

The government institutions concerned include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Security Service (SBU), and Cabinet of Ministers. Websites of these institutions were taken down.

PrivateBank which is the largest commercial bank in Ukraine and Oschadbank, the State Savings Banks of Ukraine both suffered outages as well.

The attacks on various institutions in Ukraine were confirmed by security firm Cloudflare, which claims to have observed sporadic DDoS activity in the country.

ESET researchers also discovered a new data wiper malware used in Ukraine, which is said to have been installed on hundreds of machines.

“Currently, the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine and other subjects of the national cybersecurity system are working on countering the attacks, collecting and analyzing information. We ask all authorities that have been attacked or are suspected to have been attacked to contact the Government Computer Emergency Response Team CERT-UA,” the Service of Special Communications and Information Protection said in a statement.
