Rackspace says Microsoft Exchange outage caused by ransomware attack

Rackspace, a cloud computing giant, has confirmed that it has been hit by a ransomware attack, which has left a number of its customers without email access and caused recent outages for its hosted Microsoft Exchange service.

“As you know, on Friday, December 2nd, 2022, we became aware of suspicious activity and immediately took proactive measures to isolate the Hosted Exchange environment to contain the incident,” the company said in an update to the initial incident report.

According to Rackspace, the investigation is still in its early stages, and the company has yet to determine “what, if any, data was affected.” If it is determined that sensitive information was compromised, the company will “notify customers as appropriate.”

According to the vendor’s status page, the outages are still ongoing, and Rackspace is currently migrating its Hosted Exchange customers to Microsoft 365 to minimize disruption.

Rackspace stated that the ransomware incident could result in revenue loss for its hosted exchange business, which generates approximately $30 million per year. The company also stated that it may incur additional costs as a result of its response to the incident.
