Economic sanctions have been imposed on several members of the notorious Russian cybercrime group Trickbot in an effort to combat the growing threat of ransomware attacks. According to National Security Agency (NSA) director of cybersecurity Rob Joyce, this has resulted in a decrease in ransomware attacks over the last two months.
The original sanctions were intended to prevent the group from using the financial system to launder illegal proceeds, and they will be barred from dealing with any US individuals or entities. These sanctions are expected to have an impact on the group’s ability to obtain funds from banks, and it is hoped that they will lead to the prevention of future attacks. As a result of the sanctions imposed on Russian entities, ransomware attacks are becoming less common, as criminals lose access to the outside world.
The sanctions are that ; “All property and interests in property of individuals in the United States, or in the possession or control of US persons, must be blocked and reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC),” according to America’s Department of Treasury website.
Furthermore, individuals who conduct certain transactions with the individuals designated may be subject to investigation. Also, any foreign financial institution that knowingly facilitates a significant transaction or provides significant financial services for any of the individuals or entities designated today may face correspondent or payable-through account sanctions in the United States.
The US government has also blacklisted several other Russian individuals and organizations with alleged links to cybercrime activities.
